Free quit smoking and vaping help in the US
Last updated 20 July 2026 · All services below are free and confidential
The US has more free quit support than most people realize, and almost nobody uses it: 1-800-QUIT-NOW routes to your state's quitline with trained coaches, texting programs run daily support to your phone, and most insurance plans must cover quit medication. Here is the full list, with what each one is good for.
Call: 1-800-QUIT-NOW (1-800-784-8669)
One number, every state. Calling connects you to your state quitline, where trained quit coaches build a plan with you, and many states mail free nicotine patches or gum while supplies allow. Spanish speakers can call 1-855-DÉJELO-YA (1-855-335-3569). Quitline coaching measurably raises quit rates, it costs nothing, and the coaches have heard every version of "I've tried before."
Text: SmokefreeTXT and quitSTART
The National Cancer Institute's Smokefree.gov runs SmokefreeTXT, a 6-to-8-week text program with daily tips and 24/7 keyword support, plus the quitSTART app for teens. Sign-up takes a minute on the site, and texting fits the moments a phone call never will, like a craving in a meeting.
Young and quitting vapes: This is Quitting
Truth Initiative's This is Quitting program (text DITCHVAPE to 88709) has enrolled hundreds of thousands of young vapers. Anonymous, built for the under-25 crowd, and paired with our own teen quit guide.
Insurance: medication is usually covered
Under US preventive-care rules, most insurance plans and Medicaid cover stop-smoking treatment, often including nicotine replacement and prescription options with no copay. Ask your doctor or pharmacist what your plan covers before paying out of pocket; the NRT comparison explains the formats.
