Free NHS quit smoking support, all of it
Last updated 20 July 2026 · All services below are free
The UK runs one of the best-funded quit systems anywhere, free at the point of use: the NHS Smokefree helpline on 0300 123 1044, local stop smoking services whose combination of coaching plus medication makes quitting roughly three times as likely, and a solid NHS app. Here is the map.
Call: the National Smokefree Helpline
England's helpline, 0300 123 1044, puts you through to a trained adviser weekdays 9am to 8pm and weekends 11am to 4pm. Scotland has Quit Your Way on 0800 84 84 84, and Wales runs Help Me Quit on 0800 085 2219. All three talk you through options, local services, and a quit plan.
Local stop smoking services: the odds-tripler
The unglamorous best thing in UK quitting: weekly support from a trained adviser plus stop-smoking medicine, free or at prescription cost, via your GP, pharmacist, or a self-referral through the NHS Better Health service finder. The NHS reports you are around three times more likely to quit with this combination than alone. The NRT comparison covers what they might prescribe.
The NHS Quit Smoking app
Tracks smoke-free days, money saved, and health milestones through the first 28 days, the threshold the NHS pushes because passing it makes staying quit five times more likely. Pair it with our day-by-day timeline to see what your body is doing while the counter climbs.
Vaping in the UK: a different position
UK health policy treats vaping as a quit-smoking tool: far less harmful than cigarettes, so a smoker who fully switches cuts their risk substantially, and not harmless, so the end goal stays nicotine-free. If you are done with the vape too, the quit vaping plan and taper guide cover the exit, with UK strength caps built into the numbers.
What quitting buys at UK prices
With packs around fifteen pounds, a 15-a-day habit clears four thousand pounds a year. The UK savings calculator does your exact figure in ten seconds.
Between appointments, there's the app
SmokeFree AI covers the moments the services can't reach: a craving rescue and a coach at 2am. Launching August 15, 2026 on Android.
