How to quit vaping when everyone around you vapes
By Nick, founder of SmokeFree AI, who quit after 23 years · Last updated 14 August 2026 · General information, not medical advice
This is the hardest version of quitting and it gets the least written about, because the advice usually assumes you can simply avoid it. You cannot avoid your own flat, your own friends or your own break room. Here is what works when the thing you are quitting is permanently within arm's reach.
Do not wait for them to stop
The quiet hope in most of these situations is that your partner or your friends will quit at the same time and it will be easier. Occasionally that happens. Usually it does not, and waiting turns into months.
Your quit cannot be conditional on someone else's decision, because you do not control it. Assume everyone around you carries on exactly as they are, and build a plan that survives that.
Say it once, plainly, then stop discussing it
Tell the people you see daily that you have stopped, and tell them what you need, which is usually just that they do not offer. One short conversation is worth more than a month of quietly resenting them for something they do not know about.
Keep it low key. Announcements invite debate, and the last thing you want on day three is a discussion about whether vaping is really that bad.
The first night out is the real test
Alcohol plus a friend group that vapes is the single most common way an early quit ends, and it rarely feels like a decision at the time.
Decide before you go, not while you are there. Know what you will say when it is offered, which can be as short as "I have stopped, thanks". Consider making the first one a shorter night, and go outside with people if you want to rather than hiding indoors, since isolating yourself socially is how quits get abandoned for being miserable.
Living with a vaper
Ask for two specific things rather than a general effort: that they do not vape in the room you sleep in, and that they keep the device out of shared surfaces where you will see it constantly. Both are small asks and both remove a lot of cues.
Expect a difficult fortnight and say so in advance. Some of the irritability of withdrawal will land on them, and knowing it is coming makes it survivable for everyone.
If your whole friend group vapes
You do not need new friends. You need the first three or four occasions to go differently, after which the reflex is much weaker.
Have somewhere for your hands to be. Hold a drink, keep your phone in the other pocket, step outside for air without the device. The awkwardness is real and it is short.

Launching September 1, 2026Common questions
Can you quit vaping if your partner still vapes?
Yes, and plenty of people do. It is harder because the cues are constant, so it helps to agree two specific boundaries: not in the bedroom, and the device kept out of sight in shared spaces. Do not make your quit conditional on them stopping.
What do I say when friends offer me a vape?
Something short you have decided in advance, such as "I have stopped, thanks". Short answers end the conversation. Long explanations invite a debate you do not want to have while craving.
Should I avoid my friends while quitting vaping?
Not for long. Isolating yourself makes quitting feel like a punishment, which is how people talk themselves back into it. Plan the first few occasions carefully instead, since the reflex weakens quickly once you have got through them a few times.
